What changed in the UK contractor market in 2026
IR35, AI, and a tighter senior contractor supply. Five shifts we have seen across 400+ engagements this year.
Halfway through 2026, the UK contractor market looks materially different from 2024. Here is what we are seeing on the ground.
1. Outside IR35 is back — selectively
After two cautious years, more clients are comfortable making genuine outside-IR35 determinations for clearly project-bounded work.
2. AI engineering rates are decoupling
Day rates for applied AI engineers with shipped production RAG / agent experience now sit 30–50% above general senior backend rates.
3. Shorter engagements, higher repeat rate
Average first engagement length is down to 4.2 months. But repeat rate with the same client is up to 61%.
4. Senior supply is tight
For Director-level and above, expect 3–4 weeks to shortlist, not 1–2.
5. Hybrid is the default
Pure remote contracts are a minority outside data / platform roles.
